What Are Preserved Plants?

foliagePlants and trees make up a huge portion of the beauty found on Earth. They also serve as symbols of strength and long life. Unfortunately, plants, like all other living things, must die. But what if there was a way to preserve a plant or tree’s natural beauty even after it’s life has run its course. Those who haven’t heard about preserved plants will be surprised to learn that there is.

For those who don’t know, preserved plants and trees used to be alive, and as their name implies, they have been treated and cared for in a way that allows people to enjoy their original look and feel for many, many years. They can even retain their original, naturally pleasing scent. Plants can retain their original vibrancy for 10-15 years, and many more years than that.

Ironically, much of the benefit of preserved plants lies in the fact that they are no longer actually alive. That’s because preserved plants require no regular maintenance. They don’t need to be watered or placed in an area that provides light, and their soil doesn’t need to be changed. They may need to clean it of dust and residue on occasion, but other than that, preserved plants are work and worry-free investments.

Like anyone else, we use our own combination of materials and techniques to preserve plants. Different plants may call for slightly different processes. Sometimes, parts of a plant will even be reconstructed from other natural materials. In all cases, solutions are applied or injected to slow and stop the natural deterioration process. Of course, these are non-toxic.

If you’re just learning about the existence of preserved plants, it might seem like some sort of brand new, high-tech endeavor. However, it actually goes back many, many years. Dyes and glycerin have been used to preserve plants for decades.
